Part 2: Ending the Demand in Your City.

Read Part 1: Ending the Demand for Commercial Sex for insight into who is buying sex and why.

For those who are selling sex, meeting the demand to purchase it can be immensely lucrative. As basic economics indicate, demand drives supply.

WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT?

You may have recently seen numerous headlines about nationwide sex stings and undercover sex trafficking busts. Along with the FBI, Colorado law enforcement is sending a clear message that buying sex is not tolerated in our state.Particularly in Fort Collins, some employed strategies to allay demand are “john shaming”(publicizing the identities of arrested buyers), online stings (police posting ads on the web and arresting would-be buyers at designated meeting places), and reverse stings (female officers posing as women engaged in prostitution).

In 2014, 94 minors were recovered from sex trafficking in Colorado.

Enter in another approach being taken in Fort Collins: educating buyers. The First Offender Restoration Initiative (FORI) seeks to educate and restore first offenders and thereby reduce the demand for paid sex. FORI is operated by Chris Bruno of Restoration Counseling Center and Restoration Project.

“Sex trafficking is not a ‘women’s issue,’ but an issue that is overwhelmingly perpetuated by men, and it must be men to end it once and for all.”
– Restoration Project

WHAT’S YOUR ROLE?

“Demand” doesn’t just encompass buying sex. For those of you in Colorado, our upcoming workshop is focused on men’s specific role in ending the demand for sex trafficking, taught by Chris Bruno. It will concentrate on demand as a whole, including supposedly harmless habits and perceptions contributing to commercial sexual exploitation (like pornography). You will be empowered with practical ways to protect vulnerable groups and tangible steps to eradicate trafficking in your own backyard.
